Length comes in steps of your lumber thickness and width in steps of strip width — plan to trim the extra, or nudge those two inputs until the “actual” size lands where you want it.

Assumes 1/8″ kerf, 1/8″ planing allowance per slice, 1″ panel trim, rough stock 1/4″ over milled size. Multi-species patterns: buy the waste allowance in each species. Never run end grain through a thickness planer — drum sander or hand plane only.

The dimension rotation, spelled out

End-grain boards confuse everyone once: after the 90° flip, none of your lumber’s dimensions point the way they started. The mapping is fixed:

  • Milled lumber thickness → board length (each crosscut slice contributes one thickness-worth of length)
  • Strip rip width → board width (strips per panel × width)
  • Crosscut slice width → board thickness (minus flattening)

Every checkerboard square you see on the finished top is one strip’s cross-section: lumber thickness × strip width. Want square checkers? Rip strips to the same width as your milled thickness.

Where the waste really goes

A finished 18 × 12 × 1.5″ board contains just 2.25 board feet of wood, but you’ll buy roughly double: kerf eats a slice-width every dozen cuts, both glue-ups surrender 1/8″ per face to flattening, rough lumber carries 1/4″ of milling skin, and one test slice or blown glue joint is normal. That 2× ratio is healthy — plans that promise less are lying to you at the lumberyard.

Frequently asked questions

How does the two-glue-up method actually work?

Rip strips, edge-glue them into a flat panel (glue-up #1), crosscut that panel into slices, stand every slice on end so the grain points up, and glue again (glue-up #2). The rotation is the magic: your lumber’s thickness becomes the board’s length steps, strip width becomes the width steps, and the crosscut width becomes the thickness.

Why is my final size limited to “steps”?

Length grows one lumber-thickness at a time and width one strip-width at a time — an 18″ target from 1.75″ stock gives 11 slices = 19.25″ before trimming. Either trim after glue-up or adjust strip width / lumber choice until the steps land on your target. The calculator shows the “actual” size for exactly this reason.

How thick should an end grain board be?

1.5″–2″ is the sweet spot. Under about 1.25″ end-grain boards are prone to cupping and cracking; over 2″ they get heavy and hard to store. The calculator adds 1/8″ per slice for flattening, since you’ll sand or hand-plane the faces after glue-up #2.

Can I flatten an end grain board with a thickness planer?

No — this is the classic disaster. Planer knives catch end grain and can blow chunks out of the board (or worse, kick it back). Flatten with a drum sander, a router flattening sled, or a sharp low-angle hand plane working from the edges inward.
